Adult Summer Reading Raffle Book Reviews

Week 1

Skinnydipping by Bethany Frankel.  Five stars.  Never expected to enjoy as much as I did – great plot.  Couldn’t put down. – N. Scala

The Expats
by Chris Pavone
.  Five stars.  Loved this book!!  Fast paced, couldn’t put it down!!! High recommend!! – Anonymous

Matched by Ally Condie.  For a young adult novel, I was surprised at how much I liked it.  Kept me interested, can’t wait to read the next one in the series. – Colleen Bonfiglio

The Art of HearingHeartbeats
by Jan-Philipp Sendker.
Five stars. One of the best. – Thea Goldstein

The Fiery Cross
by Diana Gabaldon
.  Five stars.  Fifth in a series of tremendously exciting historical fiction.  It’s serious, riotously funny, very sexy, and sublimely written.  The “heroine” is a time traveler from the 20th century (do not be put off by this!) who goes to 18th-century Scotland in the earlier books and is currently in pre-revolutionary North Carolina (see for yourself how she got there) with the love of her life and wonderfully-realized other characters.  Start with Outlander, the first of the series, and then thank me!  -- Judy Cohen

Top-of-the-Stairs Gallery

The Orangeburg Library is proud to present “Hidden Talents,” a surprising Art Show with unusual works of art created by the Staff and Board of Trustees and their families. The show can be seen at the library’s Top-of-the-Stairs Gallery from July 5 to September 9.

The concept for “Hidden Talents” was born at a Staff Holiday Party in December, where Children’s Librarian, Angela Krajcar, suggested a Staff Art Show and everyone present volunteered to participate. But the complete surprise was the unique and diverse works of art that were assembled on the due date. Director, William Langham, chronicled one of his favorite walks in a photograph and Research Librarian, Cheryl McNeil, created pocketbooks from her husband’s old trousers. Library Management Chief, Libby Andreopoulos, exhibited costumes of the Cowardly Lion and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, that she had created for her grandchildren. Also on display are original thought-provoking poems, a woodburned plaque of a beloved pet, needlepoint racing horses, linoleum cuts, collages, sketches in ink and charcoal and a variety of digital photographs.
All
library patrons and visitors are welcome to view the “Hidden Talents” Top-of-the-Stairs exhibit which is accessible by elevator, if assistance is required.

Largely autobiographical, writer and director Michael Mills, tells the story of a straight son who is emotionally reeling from two bits of knowledge learned simultaneously: that his father is gay and is dying of cancer. In an Oscar-winning performance, Christopher Plummer, heads a brilliant
cast that connects mothers and fathers, parents and children, sons and lovers and even men and their dogs. The Jack Russell steals the show!
Rated R – 105 minutes

Tips for placing holds

I know the catalog can be tricky and there are often multiple records for one title.  If you are looking for a popular book like The Hunger Games or Fifty Shades series, it’s best to limit your search to your home library and then place your hold.

Each library gives hold priority to their patrons.  That means if you go to a library that is not your home library and place a hold, you will be skipped over by all their patrons.  This also means that they will not send out an item if there are holds at their library.  You will have to wait until their list is complete until they will fill your hold.  You will wait for a very long time for some books.

Most libraries will not loan new materials to other libraries for at least 3-6 months.  They want to give their patrons a chance to read new material before sending out to other libraries.  You can tell which ones will send items out.  On the record, under material type it will have “ILL OK”.  If they won’t send it out, it’ll have “Local holds only”.

If it looks like the library doesn’t own a certain title or if you have any questions about searching that catalog, ask a librarian.  We are here to help.
